Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau star in this drama directed by Michaelangelo Antonioni which depicts one day and night in the lives of a novelist and his wife. As Giovanni Pontano (Mastroianni) celebrates the publication of his latest book, he and his wife Lidia (Moreau) visit a seriously ill friend in hospital. From there they progress to a book signing for Giovanni and later a party but Lidia remains aloof. When they leave the party at dawn, the two are finally forced to confront the state of their marriage and consider their future together. The cast also includes Monica Vitti, Bernhard Wicki and Rosy Mazzacurati.
