Alex Proyas's Dark City (1998) is a neo-noir science fiction film that follows John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), a man who wakes in a hotel room with no memory of his identity, a dead woman on the floor, and a detective (William Hurt) on his trail. He discovers that a shadowy group of beings called The Strangers physically reshapes the city and alters the memories of its inhabitants each midnight — except that Murdoch appears to share their telekinetic abilities. With a screenplay by Proyas, Lem Dobbs, and David S. Goyer, and featuring Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, and Richard O'Brien, the film is a visually sumptuous exploration of identity and memory shot through with German expressionism and American noir. Arrow Films presents a brand new 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negatives, approved by director of photography Dariusz Wolski, with both the Director's Cut and Theatrical Cut.
