In the 1980s, special make-up effects artists became stars — and sooner or later they were bound to become the hero. In F/X: Murder by Illusion (1986), effects genius Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) is hired by the Department of Justice to fake the death of a gangster entering witness protection. But when the sting goes wrong and Rollie himself becomes the prime suspect, he must go on the run with only his wits and his bag of tricks to survive, while grizzled cop Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy) closes in. The smash-hit success of F/X made a sequel inevitable, and under the direction of ace Australian filmmaker Richard Franklin (Psycho II), F/X 2: The Deadly Art of Illusion (1991) sees Rollie reluctantly drawn back into the game, with the stakes higher than ever.
