Brian De Palma writes and directs this crime thriller starring Michael Caine and Angie Dickinson. Middle-aged New York housewife Kate Miller (Dickinson) visits her psychiatrist Dr. Robert Elliott (Caine) and shares the lack of fulfilment in her sex life with him. On her way home, she meets an anonymous man, has sex with him, and is then attacked in an elevator by a mysterious blonde woman. The only witness to the attack is call girl Liz Blake (Nancy Allen), who subsequently joins forces with Kate's son Peter (Keith Gordon) in an attempt to catch the culprit.
