Three landmark films from Italian master Dino Risi span the peak years of commedia all'italiana. Il Vedovo (1959) stars Alberto Sordi as a feckless husband who begins plotting the murder of his successful wife when he realises she stands between him and a large inheritance. Il Mattatore (1960) features Vittorio Gassman in a dazzling performance as a small-time fraudster whose gift for mimicry allows him to reinvent himself at will, recounting his career of scams in flashback to an amateur con man who has tried and failed to swindle him. Il Sorpasso (1962) reunites Risi and Gassman, casting him alongside Jean-Louis Trintignant as a reserved law student pulled into an impulsive road trip by an insufferable but magnetic stranger — a film that quietly transcends its comic premise to become a profound meditation on life, friendship and the open road.
